What Does Xequemate Mean?

Xequemate means “checkmate” in Portuguese.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often compared to a physical game of chess. Every movement creates a reaction, every position presents a problem to solve, and technique and strategy can overcome strength alone.

At Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu, we believe those lessons extend far beyond the mats. Through discipline, perseverance, and continuous improvement, our goal is to help every student unleash their potential both in Jiu-Jitsu and in everyday life.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Adults

More Than a Workout

There’s a reason people get hooked on Jiu-Jitsu. Every class gives you something new to learn, a problem to solve, and an opportunity to get better. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a workout for both your body and your mind. You’ll build strength, improve endurance, increase mobility, relieve stress, and learn practical skills, all while challenging yourself in a way that never feels like another boring trip to the gym. Beyond the mats, Jiu-Jitsu teaches practical self defense skills that can help you stay calm, create control, and respond more confidently in real world situations.

Some of the biggest benefits happen beyond physical fitness. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to stay calm under pressure, solve problems, become comfortable with challenges, and build confidence through real progress. There’s always something new to learn, which makes training just as mentally engaging as it is physical.

Never trained before? That’s okay. Everyone on the mats started with a first class. Our experienced students train alongside beginners in an environment where you can learn at your own pace, meet new people, and become part of a community built around helping each other improve.

Experienced practitioners will find plenty of opportunities to sharpen their game, troubleshoot positions, explore advanced techniques, and get challenging rounds with training partners who push them to keep improving.

And when class ends, you don’t have to leave the mats. Our optional Open Mat is your time. Stay for extra rounds, drill something you’ve been working on, grab a teammate and troubleshoot a position, ask questions, or just hang out with the people you train with. It’s where techniques start to click, friendships are built, and a lot of the best learning happens.

Unleash your potential.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kids

More Than a Martial Art

Jiu-Jitsu gives kids a place to be challenged, make mistakes, try again, and discover what they’re capable of. Our Jacksonville kids BJJ program combines movement, technique, games, and structured training to keep kids engaged while teaching lessons that reach far beyond the mats.

They learn how to listen when it’s time to listen, work when something is difficult, stay composed under pressure, respect their teammates, and keep going when they don’t get something right the first time. Along the way, they’re getting exercise, making friends, learning practical skills, and building genuine confidence through accomplishment.

We’re not just teaching kids how to become better at Jiu-Jitsu. We’re helping them become confident, disciplined, resilient young people.

Strong bodies. Strong minds. Confident kids.

Why Choose Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu?

High-Level Jiu-Jitsu. A Down-to-Earth Atmosphere. A Team That Feels Like Family.

Choosing the right Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym is about more than finding a place to train. It’s about finding the right people to train with. At Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu in Jacksonville, FL, we’re proud to offer experienced instruction and high level training without losing the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes people want to keep coming back.

One of the biggest strengths of our academy is the experience already on the mats. Whether it’s your very first class or you’ve been training for years, there is always someone here who can help you take the next step in your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

We’re also proud to be a Luiz Palhares affiliated academy, connecting our Jacksonville BJJ community to an established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineage and a tradition of technical, high-quality instruction.

But what truly makes Xequemate special is the culture we’ve built. We take Jiu-Jitsu seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Our gym is laid back, friendly, and welcoming. There are no egos required to walk through our doors. Over time, training partners become friends, friends become family, and the gym becomes somewhere you genuinely look forward to being.

I’ve never done Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before. Can I still join?

Absolutely! Most people who walk into a Jiu-Jitsu gym started with zero experience. You don’t need to know the terminology, be in great shape, or have any martial arts experience before your first class.

Our instructors and teammates at Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu in Jacksonville, FL will help you learn everything as you go. We pride ourselves on having a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere where beginners can feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace.

Still nervous or not sure what to expect? Fill out our contact form and Sarah will reach out by email, phone, or text as soon as possible. She can answer your questions or simply walk you through exactly how everything works before you ever step onto the mats.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform consisting of a jacket, pants, and belt. The Gi can be gripped and used as part of many techniques.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in athletic clothing, typically a rash guard and grappling shorts.

We offer both styles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Jacksonville, and training both is a great way to develop a well-rounded game.

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

If you're brand new, don't worry about buying Jiu-Jitsu gear before you come in. Regular, comfortable workout clothes are fine for your first Gi or No-Gi class. We can provide temporary gear during your first class if needed.

Flip-flops or slides are highly recommended because you'll be taking your shoes on and off whenever you enter and leave the mats.

We also have Jiu-Jitsu gear available for purchase at the gym when you're ready for your own.

Do I need to be in shape before starting Jiu-Jitsu?

No. You don't need to “get in shape first” to start BJJ. Jiu-Jitsu can be what helps you get there.

Training provides a full-body workout while helping develop strength, endurance, mobility, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. Because you're also learning techniques and solving problems with a training partner, many people find it much more engaging than a traditional workout.

Everyone trains at their own level, so come as you are.

What are your hygiene rules?

Because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close-contact sport, good hygiene is extremely important. We train closely with one another, so everyone has a responsibility to help keep their teammates and our mats clean.

Please arrive clean, wear freshly washed training clothes or a clean Gi, keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed, and make sure your feet are clean before stepping onto the mats.

If you're sick or have a contagious skin condition, please wait until you're healthy before returning to training. Your teammates will appreciate it!

Can I wear shoes on the Jiu-Jitsu mats?

Never. Shoes are not permitted on the mats.

Just as importantly, you should wear shoes whenever you step OFF the mats. We don't want someone walking around the restroom or gym barefoot and then bringing whatever is on the floor back onto the training mats.

Clean feet + clean mats = happier training partners. 😄

What should I do when I arrive?

When you enter the gym, you'll find our check-in kiosk near the front door. Enter the personal passcode you created when signing up to check into your class. This allows us to keep track of your attendance and training progress.

After checking in, put your belongings away, take off your shoes, and come join us on the mats. Students typically begin stretching and warming up together before instruction starts.

If it's your first day and you're unsure what to do, just introduce yourself. We'll take it from there.

What ages can participate in Kids Jiu-Jitsu?

Our Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is for ages 3–15 and gives children a structured, positive, and age-appropriate environment to learn BJJ, stay active, and have fun.

While they're learning Jiu-Jitsu, we're also focused on helping kids develop confidence, discipline, respect, perseverance, focus, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that can carry over into school, sports, and everyday life.

As students get older and gain experience, we also recognize that every child develops differently. Some of our larger or more experienced kids may be invited to train with the adult class when our instructors feel it would benefit them. This gives advanced students the opportunity to work with training partners closer to their size and skill level while continuing to challenge their Jiu-Jitsu.

If you're unsure which class would be the best fit for your child, just reach out. We're happy to talk with you about their age and experience and help you find the right place for them in our Kids BJJ program in Jacksonville, FL.

Their first class is free, so they can experience Xequemate and meet our instructors and teammates before you decide to sign up.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for shy or less confident kids?

It can be a great activity for them. Jiu-Jitsu gives children opportunities to accomplish difficult things in small steps, interact with teammates, learn from mistakes, and see their own improvement.

Confidence isn't something we expect kids to walk through the door already having. It's something we want to help them build.

What is Open Mat?

Open Mat is optional additional training time after our adult class.

There isn't a traditional structured class during this time. You can roll with teammates, drill the technique you just learned, work through a position you've been struggling with, ask questions, get additional rounds in, or simply hang out and spend time with the team.

For beginners, it's a great opportunity to practice and ask questions at your own pace. For experienced grapplers, it's valuable extra mat time to troubleshoot positions, sharpen your game, and get more rounds in.

Open Mat is also a big part of the social side of Xequemate. A lot of friendships are built after class when everyone is simply hanging out on the mats.

I already train BJJ. Are experienced grapplers welcome?

Absolutely.

Xequemate isn't only a beginner-focused academy. Our mats include multiple black belts and numerous experienced, high-ranking practitioners, giving experienced grapplers plenty of opportunities for technical training and challenging rounds.

Whether you're relocating to Jacksonville, visiting the area, or simply looking for a new BJJ gym in Jacksonville, FL, we'd love to have you come train with us.

Is Xequemate affiliated with another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team?

Yes. Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu is a Luiz Palhares affiliated academy.

Our affiliation connects our Jacksonville academy to an established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineage while allowing us to maintain the welcoming, laid-back culture that has become such an important part of Xequemate.

Does Xequemate compete in BJJ tournaments?

Yes! Competition is absolutely part of our team.

Our students and instructors have competed at many levels, and our mats include experienced competitors and coaches who can help students prepare for competition.

That said, you never have to compete to belong here. Some people train because they love competition. Others train for fitness, self-defense, confidence, stress relief, or simply because Jiu-Jitsu becomes the best part of their week. Both are equally welcome at Xequemate.

Can I train BJJ just for self-defense?

Absolutely. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches practical skills for controlling another person, escaping difficult positions, staying composed under pressure, and understanding how to use leverage and technique rather than relying solely on strength.

Several of our instructors also incorporate real-world self-defense concepts into their teaching.

What if I'm nervous about coming in alone?

That's completely normal, and you don't have to figure everything out by yourself.

Fill out the contact form on our website and Sarah will personally follow up by email, phone, or text. Ask as many questions as you'd like, or simply tell her you've never trained before and want someone to explain how your first visit works.

Once you arrive, we'll show you where everything is, introduce you to the team, and help you get started.

Your first job isn't to know Jiu-Jitsu. It's just to walk through the door. We'll help with the rest.

This is one of the best opportunities to practice what you learned during class, get extra rounds in, and spend time developing the areas of your Jiu-Jitsu you want to improve most. It’s also a chance to relax after training, build friendships, and become part of the Xequemate family.

Train, learn, roll, and enjoy the mats with us in Jacksonville, FL.
